Returning to work after having a child can be tough – physically, emotionally and logistically. Many women say they feel ‘out of touch’ with the working world, lacking in confidence and racked with doubt over the best options to suit their parental schedule. But does it need to be such a daunting challenge? There are certainly lots of areas to consider. Whether it’s balancing guilt with career fulfilment, juggling earnings with potential childcare costs or mapping out a plan to cover both home and work needs.

If this sounds like you, what is reassuring is the level of advice and support available for women returning to work. The problem is finding it. And more importantly, finding the time to find it. And then fitting it in on your daily ‘things to do’ list. This was a big motivating factor for our team creating the UK’s first ever event dedicated to Women in Business. If you are a Mum exploring your working options, either for an employer or developing your own business idea, then The Women in Business Expo is a place where you should be able to find all the answers.

We wanted to help make it easier for women to get back on to the career ladder by bringing all of the resources, information and inspiration together in one exhibition. As we’re expecting lots of Mums to visit, convenience was a critical factor. So the Farnborough-based event has easy transport links, free entry and parking, and a professionally-run crèche on site to give every visitor the opportunity to maximise their time there.

The exhibitors will include both local and national companies offering various business, franchise and career opportunities. You might be looking to retrain, considering a franchise business or searching for start-up advice – our aim is to leave you feeling informed and inspired and ready to take on your next challenge. There will also be plenty of free advice in the seminar theatres, with relevant topics such as essential tips for returning to work, how to achieve a good work/life balance, and information on wellbeing and life coaching.

Many women feel they lack confidence after a lengthy spell out of the workplace. It can be a challenge keeping informed and motivated, particularly when there’s another little human being demanding all of your attention. The Women in Business Expo is a great opportunity for you to shift the focus and give you access to stacks of advice and ideas about returning to work. There will be practical help for every level – even if you’re at the early stages and still brushing up your career credentials.

The event will also cover the basic essentials. With a free interview and CV clinic ran by experts who can give you an insight into how to stand out from the crowd – on paper and in person. If you’re looking for motivation, there will be no shortage of success stories to drive your enthusiasm. The key note speakers are two of the UK’s most well regarded businesswomen, Baroness Karren Brady of Knightsbridge CBE and Lady Michelle Mone, Baroness of Mayfair OBE. Both will share their immense business experience, tales of entrepreneurship and how they successfully manage companies at the highest level.

Making the transition back to the working world can feel overwhelming for Mums, or indeed any women who have taken a career break. Going back to business is an individual choice and there is no such thing as a perfect time to return. Getting prepared by seeking advice and inspiration will have a positive impact on your decision and your future. And when you are ready to step back on the ladder, you can do so with confidence.
