Quex Park is an historic country estate near the Kent coast at Birchington-on-Sea, near Margate. For a day out for all the family, there really is something for everyone at Quex Park.
Built in the early 1400s it was named Quex House in the 1500s by the Quekes family that lived here. It has belonged to the Powell- Cotton family for over 200 years and undergone many changes in that time.
The beautiful 15-acre gardens to be seen today were developed in Victorian times.
The Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park was established in 1896 by Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton to house cultural objects and natural history specimens which were collected on expeditions to Africa and Asia.
The Powell-Cotton Museum has the most impressive Natural History dioramas in Europe. The museum is open from mid Jan to mid Dec.
Although Quex House remains a family home there are several rooms which are open to the public during the summer season (April – Mid November) and provide a special addition to a visit to the museum.
Quex Gardens comprise seven acres of stunning Victorian landscaping and layout. With many unusual plants, a walled garden, greenhouses, a rare melon pit and strutting peacocks, there is plenty to see.
Quex Park holds many events throughout the year including a Summer Prom, Craft Fair, Night at the Museum, Festiv-Isle, Archeology for You and much, much more, details of which you can find at www.quexpark.co.uk/ events.
A landmark within the park is the Waterloo Tower, built 1819, with its extremely rare secular peal of 12 bells. Exclusive guided tours are run on two days during the summer.
The park also has a guntower which was built as a sea lookout post and also a clocktower built circa 1820.
There are many more visitor attractions and leisure activities to see and do, these include:
