The results are in, did it work?…
January is once again upon us. A time when many people look to make changes in their lives, especially relating to health and fitness. Gym memberships increase, good intentions are flying about and the sales of lycra gym-wear go through the roof.
In September of 2014, I decided to volunteer for the ‘90-day Body Transformation Challenge’. A personalised plan developed by Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach. Over 90 days the idea was to shift, shape and sustain a body that was in need of a little overhaul! Here we look at how the challenge went…
Why did you decide to take the challenge?
“I started to notice how sluggish I felt in the mornings. Being a morning person this began to take it’s toll on me. I also couldn’t fit in to the majority of my clothes any more and this made me feel miserable. I refused to go clothes shopping and buy a bigger size, so there was only one thing for it…”
Was it difficult to get started?
“In the beginning, people joked about me not being able to drink. Funnily enough, I found this quite easy and didn’t miss those cheeky beers or glasses of fizz. After a few days, I started to notice a difference in how I felt; I was more alert and seemed to be getting much more done. When you begin to notice such a difference, your motivation increases to achieve better results. Once I got my head around the fact I would have to be more prepared when it came to organising meals, it simply became a part of my regular routine.”
What kind of diet is it?
“It isn’t a diet, it’s a change in lifestyle and eating habits. In fact, I now eat more than I did before. It’s about eating the right things at the right time so your body is getting the nutrients it needs. By combining HIIT, (High Intensity Interval Training) which means you do short bursts of activity, rest and so on, it was even easy to be able to do these exercises at home without having to go to the gym. It’s funny, because after doing the exercises in the morning, I had much more energy than normal throughout the day.”
How soon did you really start to see a difference?
“After a few days. I felt better and then after about a week, when I started to try on clothes that previously didn’t fit, my motivation to continue increased. I gauged my changes by the size of jeans I could fit into. When I was able to get into my third largest pair without my muffin top spilling over the edge of them, I was so happy.”
Is the plan easily achievable?
“The plan is personal to YOU, so it takes into account your food tastes and the shape you are in when you begin. You aren’t sticking to a diet and the food options have enough variety to tantalise your taste buds. The plan is divided in to three stages so your menu choices change after the first 30 days. Joe is on hand to help you through it should you need it and he is extremely motivating through his use of Twitter and Instagram.
The whole 90 days is an experience and by the time you complete it, you won’t want to go back to your old ways. Why would you? You are eating well, feeling great and your attitude to what you eat will have totally changed. That’s not to say you can’t go out for dinner or have to miss out on parties etc; you just become more aware of the food choices you make.
I noticed I wasn’t craving things like chocolate, or worse in my case, BREAD. My body was happy with the food and the three litres of water per day it was being given. When it was time to move on to the second phase, I found this a little more difficult as my work commitments dramatically changed. However, I am pleased with the progress I made and continue to pay more attention to what I eat and continue to exercise regularly. It’s no longer a chore.”
Do you have to take supplements?
“Although supplements are listed in the plan, they are only to enhance your results. As I am not a fan of taking tablets I limited it to Omega and Vitamins. I did buy protein powder and have to be honest, it wasn’t as vile as I thought it would be.”
What advice would you give to someone thinking about making these changes?
“If you are serious about making changes then you will make them happen! You have to WANT to make it work. Embarking on a challenge like this takes commitment, dedication and desire! It helps if the people close to you are aware of what you are doing, so they can support you and cheer you on as you progress.”
How can someone take part in the challenge?
“Visit www.thebodycoach.co.uk and get started. In just a few days you could be well on your way to a healthier, better functioning and more energetic version of YOU!”
